Ein Schlechter Esel VW By Randy Reynolds & Tommy Alexander

Armed with ambitious modifications, this 2000 VW Beetle, Owned by Phillip Carey of Gastonia, North Carolina, is truly bad ass or the Germans might say "Schlechter Esel"! More mild than wild in manner, Phillip livens up, however, when it comes to talking about his VW Bug. "I guess you could say I'm a VW junkie," says Phillip Carey, who has spent the past several years completely modifying the bug throughout.

Now, striking in appearance, its panels are beautifully coated in Sunset Pearl by House of Kolor. Jet black was used as a two-tone to split up the base coat from the roof down the pillars touching the wiper cowl and then stretching back around to the base of the rear window. The closer and longer you look, the more you can appreciate the intricate detail and extensive custom bodywork, most notably a pair of expertly installed suicide doors. As with the rest of the body, both doors feature shaved handles with mechanical remote entry.

Another major aspect regarding the Sedan's exterior mods include a sliding rag top, a Bernt V-1 seamless body kit with front billet insert and custom fog lamps, frenched-in Mercedes Benz headlights, frenched-in taillights, frenched-in angled license plate mount, and custom rear spoiler.

Under the hood features the stock power plant, but with a painted-to-match engine cover, cold air intake, and a red top Optima battery. The engine compartment is very clean and the paint really sets it off.

Interior wise, Phillip kept the custom theme flowing, using a number of hand-crafted components, including an all suede interior (dash, headliner, pillars, seats, etc.), along with various pieces painted to match the exterior. The stock seating head rests have been shaved and the door panels received a touch of street rod styling. A billet steering wheel with a chrome three-spoke center and matching suede leather half-wrap, complements the dash and adds a little bling to the refreshed interior.

The audio/video system was also built to impress, featuring a Pioneer N2 in-dash DVD head unit with a built-in flip-out TV monitor. Two sets of Kicker 6.5-inch component speakers along with Kicker one-inch separate tweeters are displayed up front. Ample base is supplied with the use of three 12-inch Kickers stuffed into a custom fiberglass box that rests in the backseat area. The system is powered through a pair of digital high-powered Kicker amps, good for a total of 1,858 watts!

The VW rests on fully chromed set of TSI six-spoke 20-inch wheels with 225/30/20 NanKang Rubber. When Phillip hits the switch, the wheels tuck nicely thanks to the custom Air Ride suspension.

Phillip has one cool ride or should we say he has "Ein Schlechter Esel VW"? (German Translation: One Bad Ass VW)

Shout Out: "Thanks to Sarah, Anthony, and My Parents." -Phillip Carey
