Understanding 'Custom', By Kevin Hertzog

When I bring up the topic "customs" most of my friends ask the question "why would you do that to a truck or a car?" or "why do you blow that much cash on parts for a car?" The response I give is simple: why not? Afterall, why would someone blow $50,000-60,000 on a new Hummer or Cadillac, when that chunk of money can be used to make a bad ass custom! Some people just don't understand what this "custom thing" is all about.

First, one needs to understand the enthusiast. All custom auto enthusiasts have a goal to reach and that goal is finishing a ride. Knowing what's hot on the market and what just plain sucks is important! Its not easy at all to start or finish a ride. People need to understand there are highs and lows in this thing of ours. Sometimes you are really pushing ahead on your project and can see the light at the end of the tunnel... only to have cold water thrown on the whole damn project! Some of you builders know what I am talking about... your tools suddenly are "MIA" and your wife/girlfriend is bitchin' about you spending too much time in the garage. Or better yet, you ride decideds to talk back. You know what I'm talking about, your bolting a new piece on and the bolts break or your working underneath and the jack stands give out so on and so forth.

When your working on a project your gonna be faced with sweat, pain, and lack of sleep. Some people, like my friends, who drive stock rides that don't have a single custom item attached just don't understand why we think stock just plain sucks. Everything we drive has to have that custom touch. Even our daily drivers a lot of times will at least have a sweet set of wheels bolted up and maybe a custom audio system. Down the road, who knows... maybe that daily driver will be a future project.

Custom auto enthusiasts thrive on being unique and being unique is what custom is all about. That is why we spend the money and time on our rides, that is, to be unique... to own one cool custom ride.
