Luck of the Draw By J.R. Janicek

Bryan Clark always wanted a clean muscle truck and as luck would have it he found one that was built and ready to roll. In 2006, Bryan had place his 1999 Tahoe 4x4 on Craigslist, so that he could finance his 2000 GMC Sierra project which currently has a Denali front clip, lays frame on air bags, and has a grafted in set of Caddy taillights. That project came to a screeching halt when a guy named Jim inquired if Bryan would be willing to trade for a custom 1968 C-10 shortbed. Being the truck fanatic that Bryan is, we can only assume the first words out of his mouth had to have been, "Do you even have to ask?"

Within a day or two, Bryan checked out the C-10 in person to make sure he wasn't dreaming. Before Jim could finish explaining all the work that had been done to the truck, Bryan handed over the keys to his 1999 Tahoe, gave Jim a nice firm handshake, and hopped in his newly acquired muscle truck.

As Bryan was rolling down the highway, he couldn't get over the amount of power the truck had. Jim had explained to Bryan that the engine consisted of a hard-thumping 454ci big-block backed by a 400 turbo transmission connected to a 12-bolt Auburn Locker rear-end. It had an impressive amount of torque and could light up the tires very easily.

The body was relieved of all emblems, antenna, side marker lights, front and rear bumpers, as well as the tailgate handle. The bed's stake pockets were filled-in and a classy wooden bed floor was mounted into place. Finishing up the exterior appearance, the grille was welded and smoothed over and the body was painted hugger orange.

Inside the cab, the stock bench seat was recovered in black leather with orange piping. The final interior details consist of black carpet, black dash pad, tilt steering column, 5% window tint, Alpine CD player, and Auto Meter gauges to monitor the powerplant.

Jim had taken such good care of the pickup; Bryan was reluctant to modify the truck any further after giving it a good detail. After awhile, Bryan's initial urge to make it more "his" took over and he decided to give the truck a few simple mods.

Bryan felt a truck like this was meant to hug the ground. By lowering the truck 4.5-inches up front and 7-inches in the rear, the truck is now more aerodynamic and resistant to wind as the monstrous 454ci big block makes this bowtie blaze down the road. To slow down all of this radical power, Bryan performed a disc brake conversion under the nose.

Bryan was pretty happy with how the revamped suspension made his truck look more aggressive, but he still felt something was missing. The truck was sweet, but the wheels were... umm... old. The truck's new stance was made perfect by a set of 20-inch Bonspeed wheels wrapped in Toyo performance rubber.

Bryan definitely had the luck of the draw when he traded for this hidden gem that literally was hidden in a garage for the majority of its life after it had been rebuilt almost ten years prior. Nowadays, Bryan's 1968 Chevy C10 gets to see the light of day as a perfect weekend cruiser.

Shout Out: "Thanks to my wife Heidi. Thanks to Jim-- the truck is a blast to drive and will light up the 20-inch wheels at 30mph! Thanks to ESM for the feature." -Bryan Clark
